French word of the day: célibataire

Def: single

When I started lessons with Josephine, she asked if I was married and I told her I was single. “Célibataire,” she declared, writing it down on paper. God, that sounds sad, I thought. When I relayed this to Trevor later he snappily said, “Yeah, ‘single’ sounds like you’re ready to party. ‘Célibataire’ sounds like you’re entering a monastery.”

I prefer some of these synonyms that Google Translate offered:

Seul, unique, singulier, particulier, individual, résolu

Is it any coincidence that I read this pretty great article today?

  1. I always thought 'célibataire' sounded like a Libertine title!
