Things to do when you wake up at 3 a.m.

• Fly through a couple chapters of Stephen King’s latest novel (geek)
• Write your thank you notes
• Study relative pronouns in an effort to crack French grammar
• Do sit-ups at the gym—if only 42 of them
• Change your sheets and put your clothes away
• Update your Facebook status
• Flip through French Elle and National Geographic Traveler
• Create your weekly to-do list
• Check your checking balance online
• Download your favorite new single
• Stare out the window as the sky slowly turns yellow
• Sit in a café and enjoy un café crème
• Bring out the recycling
• Give your pet some much-deserved attention

After sleeping for 11 heavenly hours on Saturday, I was tired enough at 10:30 last night and turned out the light and fell promptly asleep. Then, at 3 a.m., I was dreaming that I was smuggling heroin at the office and had a fistful of it when I saw a rat in a hallway. Usually I would scream and jump out of its way, but I decided I wasn’t going to and it started coming after me to bite me so I tried kicking it and that’s when I woke up, kicking the wall. Any Jungians out there who might be able to crack that one?? Try as I could, sleep didn’t come back to me.

  1. You're in Paris and you read Stephen King? That's not cool. Read Rimbaud please. Artaud instead. Baudellaire. Listen Gainsbourg.

    Please!

  2. I just found your blog whilst searching for ideas for a weekend trip to Paris! I love it!

Any handy hints or insider tips for where to go? On a budget! And with a love for all things French, fashionable and vintage!!!

    xx

  3. I know, I know. It’s embarrassing: I’m reading in the gutter. And with a 1000+ page hard cover, it’s hardly inconspicuous slumming.

But, you know, sometimes, Mr. Sometimes, you need a little smut with your headiness… some Hugh Grant with your Sir Anthony Hopkins… some Haribou gummies instead of Pierre Hermé gateau… a Bud in between your bottles of Bordeaux. At least this girl does. Anyway, thanks for reading!

And, Shopgirl, I’m glad you found me! I’m not a huge shopper myself—weellll…. that’s not exactly true. It’s just I just don’t feel like I’ve totally cracked Paris’ shopping scene. But check the Eating and Drinking tags for some (hopefully) helpful suggestions on the restaurant and bar scenes… and email me if you have any specific questions and I’ll see if I can help.

  4. Thank you for the advice. I'll definitely check out the eating and drinking sections - that's what I plan to mainly do when in Paris!! I confess I didn't have macarons last time I went! So I must this time.

I'm putting together a post on my blog re Paris for later this month - are you ok for me to include your blog?

    Salut!

  5. Macarons, an absolute must! Ladurée and Pierre Hermé make the best. But it might be fun to do your own taste test about town.

I'd be honored to be linked from your blog! Bis

  6. You're reading "Under The Dome?!?" Isn't it *incredible?* I read the last 400 pages in one sitting!

  7. Ah I love your blog, Paris ma manques!

    Et Shopgirl,
if you're looking for vintage (and cheap vintage at that) you should hit up Le Marais. Lots of little boutiques around there where you can get dresses/bags/scarves for around 20€ (or less!). One that springs to mind is Free'p Star. they've got two shops in the marais. And there is a good one on rue des rosiers... You can get falafel afterwards!

(Amy, sorry for hijacking your post!)

And Peter Love, yes, reading 'Under The Dome'... not totally, totally sucked in, but loving it nevertheless! xo
