French cinema, French legends

Soon, everyone in Paris is going to be talking about this new movie:

But last night I saw and loved this one:

Coco & Igor was fascinating, titillating (how often do you get to use that word?) and absolutely gorgeous. I love the Belle Epoque and Art Deco interiors and fashion—so much eye candy packed into two hours (including Mads Mikkelsen). Oui, a little melodramatic, but isn’t that what period pieces are for?

  1. I can't wait to see Coco & Igor, must look out for the DVD. I saw the mini-series with Shirley Maclaine recently, but the actress who played the young Coco was much better. It was beautifully filmed and an excellent intro. to the great lady. I had just read a book about her life, and really enjoyed seeing it brought to life. There was nothing in the book or the mini-series about her relationship with Stravinsky, so I'm looking forward to that.

  2. I can't wait to see these movies too! I hope they are released in the states. It's too bad that the actress who played Jane Birkin in Gainsbourg committed suicide (in Paris) just this past May.

Thanks for your blog, Amy. Look forward to it every morning!

  3. Lesley - I love your site! Art Deco is incomparable. I am about to dive into "The Gospel According to Coco Chanel" - I think it's more tongue in cheek than proper biography, but I'm looking forward to learning more about her.

Sarah, you're too kind! Thanks for the kind words, which really make my day. But truly tragic to hear about the actress...
