Play for pleasure

When I was home in New York, I binged on many, many magazines. And one of the articles, which I think was in O (aw, Oprah!) was about seeking more pleasure in life. Not joy or happiness, but pleasure, which the author defined as something more fleeting; a momentary jolt of glee or rush of adrenaline. One of the ways he suggested doing this was playing a favorite song over and over. While I have my “Happy Music” folder on iTunes, which I do play over and over when I want to feel giddy, I also find the eclectic mix of iTunes shuffle gives me an instant lift.

I Don’t Do Crowds Camera Obscura
That Was Just a Dream Cut Copy
Melodies & Desires Lykke Li
Head On The Pixies
If I Ever Feel Better Phoenix (definitely a feel good song!)
Reasons Earth, Wind & Fire
Black Cherry Goldfrapp
Sun Was High (So Was I) Best Coast
This Is What I Sound Like Athlete
Anabel Midlake
Forever Live and Die OMD (yesss!)
Listen Now The Knife
Oh What a World Rufus Wainwright
The Last Song Ever Written Stars
Enough Aimee Mann
The Future The Drums
Sleep Sandwich Elvis Perkins (hi, Bennie!)

Back in business

It was an off-rhythm week: jetlag, head cold and beaucoup de travail. But it was fun, too. Pizza parties, birthday celebrations, outdoor concerts, Velib rides and unexpected out-of-towners. And with Alain's Cornet Vegetarien, eaten in the park, under the sunshine, I knew I was back in Paris.

Weather check: finally! sunshine! warmth!

Woah. Thursday night, Mel and I sat on a terrace for dinner without freezing our bums off (we were grossed out by the food, but that's another sad story).

Yesterday, I sat outside, in the sun, on another terrace. I was actually hot.

Last night, Sarah, Rachel and I enjoyed a concert and some short films en plein air. Then sat on the terrace of Cafe Cherie.

Today is sunny and bright. It's going to be in the 70s. I almost don't even know what to do with myself. Except go get gelato at Mary.

Sensory Friday

This week, I’m back in Paris but New York is still lingering.

• It felt so good to have the sun’s rays and summer heat on my bare legs.
• Of the many delicious things I ate, I think the very best wasn’t even a sweet—it was the smoked cod salad at Jack the Horse: smoky, creamy, generous, unique and utterly divine.
• I finally listened to La Petit Choue’s kickass birthday mix—all kinds of new musicians. Merci, Kate!
• I was dazzled by the wardrobe and art direction and cinematography in I Am Love—extraordinary.
• But now that I am back in Paris, I am surrounded by one of my all-time favorite things in the world: the smell of freshly baked baguettes. Not even the Egyptian jasmine for Hermé’s perfume smell as good as a French boulangerie at 8 o’clock in the morning.

Good morning!

One of the nice things about jetlag, I suppose, is that by 9 a.m. you’ve already had a pretty accomplished day.

I woke up at 5:30 this morning, lit my candle, poured myself a cup of coffee and a bowl of peanuts and popped in the Marc Jacobs documentary that I had to watch for work. Then it was off for a Velib ride to the lovely Parc de la Villette. Followed by cutting up the crudités for tonight’s picnic, and now it’s time for work.

Happy Friday, tout le monde!

French word of the day: fripon

Def: Roguish (adj) or a rascal.

My friends, Lionel & Sylvia, who shared this lovely bottle of champagne with me, told me "fripon" meant "kinky", which is 10x better than "roguish" and "rascal". But, in fact, I like them all.

Green pie

Thanks to this summer’s crummy weather, we missed the Peresopolis screening at Parc de la Villette last month. But no matter! Genius Jo hosted pizza-and-Persopolis chez-elle tonight. We broke out the picnic blankets and wine, piled onto the couch and floor, and had a great hold-onto-summer soirée.

But the best part was the pizza. That’s right—we found awesome pizza in Paris. Organic pizza. Veg heavy pizza. From GreenPizz, a kooky place that delivers. Woah.

Six pies we sampled: all vegetarian, all delicious. Topped with things like rocket, baby peas, caramelized onions, roasted eggplant, stinky cheese, pine nuts… it was heaven.

The sad thing is, on my Velib ride home, I realized I haven’t been this excited about new flavors in Paris for a long time. I haven’t tried anywhere new in so long. I haven’t been eating out enough. Alors, September’s agenda: dine, baby, dine!

Weather check: autumnal

Not that summer ever made an appearance in Paris (okay, there was that week in early July...), but autumn most definitely arrived while I was in New York. The air is different; crisper, brighter—like an October afternoon. There are plenty of people who relish the prospects of cozying up in leather jackets and wool scarves. I am not one of them. Give me the 96 degrees in Manhattan any day.
