American Speak: Sex Friends

Oh, you haven’t heard of that movie? The cute rom-com with America’s new sweetheart, Natalie Portman, and Ashton Kutcher? Then you must be reading from the states and not France.

Apparently the French couldn’t quite translate the idiom “No Strings Attached” and opted for the very classy “Sex Friends” instead.

    I'm curious as to why they chose "Sex Friends", when the French word for "f*ck buddy" is usually "le f*cking friend".

    But seriously, what is up with them making up their own English titles for films? Like changing the name of "The Hangover" to "Very Bad Trip"!!

    They did the same with "Cruel Intentions"; called it "Sex Intentions"?? So strange but apparently putting the word sex in a film is a good thing in France and will ensure that it is watched by teens. Hence "Sexy Dance" in place of "Step up to the Streets".

    We just saw "Winter Bones" .. here the title is "Lazos de Sangre" - "Blood Ties".

    Sometimes we get a good laugh out of how they twist the names around .. True Grit is "Steel Temple/ Temple de Acero" ..what does that mean ??

    I never notice if they use the word sex ( in titles) here often, I have a feeling they don't ..

    I still don't get why Natalie Portman would have made this; it's so beneath her. She must have been paid an obscene some of money. That said, I love the French title.

    Don't you just love being shocked by bad English on the streets of Paris? My favorite was the poster for Quick's special burgers "HARD PEPPER" and "STRONG BACON".

    It's very simple, an english title indicates that it's a film from abroad (which is "chic"), but we are not proficient enough in english to understand a title such as "Hangover" or "no strings attached". Interestingly enough, we kept "true grit" though.
